What Is A Rotator Cuff Tear In The Shoulder?

What Is A Rotator Cuff Tear In The Shoulder?

The rotator cuff is a group of muscle, ligaments and tendons in your shoulder that basically hold everything in place and stop your arm popping out of its socket when you raise you arm above your head. There are two main causes of a rotator cuff tear in the shoulder and they are, one; extreme trauma, like a big fall or sustaining and injury to your shoulder. The second is due to age, in some cases the rotator cuff just kind of falls apart as a result of normal ware and tear on the body. Sometimes we see this process is sped up by spurring in the shoulder.

But that said for most people under 40 it requires quite a large and or strong injury to tear the rotator cuff given the general robustness of the cuff in younger patients.

Useful Rotator Cuff Injury Exercises

Rotator Cuff Injury Exercise

Rotator cuff injuries can come in all shapes and sizes but the rotator cuff injury exercises you need to be performing on a regular basis to help you recover all have the same goal; to strengthen your rotator cuff and make it more robust. This strengthening process is very important not only in healing properly but also in minimizing the chances of you sustaining a similar injury in the future.

The type of injury will dictate when you can start on your rotator cuff injury exercises, if you have some tendonitis from overuse, calcium build up or spurring then your healthcare professional is more than likely going to recommend you start your training as soon as possible. Whereas if you have suffered from a major tear of the rotator cuff and have had to have surgery to correct it, then the tendons that form the rotator cuff need time to properly heal themselves and reattach and anchor to the bones.
